BiodiversityKamp Project

BiodiversityKamp project is a collaboration between UP Mindanao and the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro to document flora and fauna within the habitats of Mt. Kampalili, Maragusan, Davao de Oro to create a biodioversity conservation plan for Mt. Kampalili.

Human-Macaque Interface (HUMAIN)

Program Leader of Program HUMAIN (Human-Macaque Interface) funded by the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines. (January 2021-June 2023).

HUMAIN Program is a collaborative research and conservation project of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, UP Visayas Tacloban College, University of Southern Mindanao, and Visayas State University. The program is funded by the National Research Council of the Philiippines. The goals of the program are the following:

  1. Assess the behavior and determine the diet preferences of long-tailed macaques in selected human modified landscapes of Leyte and Mindanao islands.
  2. Identify long-tailed macaque gastro-intestinal parasite fauna in the area.
  3. Understand the societal knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of locals and tourists.
  4. Create an Interaction Index for Tourist Areas.
  5. Conduct awareness campaigns and educational activities about wildlife biology, zoonosis, human-wildlife interaction, and conservation.
  6. Recommend strategies to the local government units and tourist area mananagement to effectively manage the interecation of macaques and humans.

    Updates: The HUMAIN team has generated publications, and presented several research findings in national and international confererences about long-tailed macaques with the aim to fill in information gaps about the species in the Philippines. The team has also conducted several awareness and educational activities in the local and national levels through invited talks, media consultations, and other related activites. With the particiapation of our parners, we are aiming to develop local and national strategies to manage humans and macaques in this type of interface in the country.
